Why You Need a Retirement Portfolio

In my last post, I talked about the basics of investing. Now, let's take a step further. One of the most important things you can do for your financial freedom is create a retirement portfolio. No matter your age today, having a plan for the future is crucial. The earlier you start, the more time your money has to grow.

Introducing the Interactive Calculator

This calculator will help you figure out your ideal portfolio allocation between equity, debt, and gold. Enter your Starting Age, Retirement Age, and starting allocations to see how your portfolio transitions over time toward more conservative values. For example, an aggressive 35-year-old investor might start with 70% equity, 20% debt, and 10% gold.

Points to note:

  • This calculator is for a Normal retirement. For Early VS Normal Retirement, check this post.
  • The allocation remains constant for the first few years, depending on the current age and time left to retirement. After that, the portfolio gradually glides toward the retirement allocation.
  • Regardless of the starting allocation, equity will be 30% exactly 10 years before retirement.
  • Gold will be 10% exactly 10 years before retirement.
  • From 10 years before retirement until retirement, gold stays fixed at 10%.
  • Equity gradually reduces from 30% to 20% by retirement age.
  • Debt is calculated as the remaining percentage so the total allocation always adds up to 100%.

Understanding Each Component

  • Equity: Stocks or equity funds. Younger investors can hold more for growth.
  • Debt: Bonds or fixed-income investments. Stabilizes the portfolio.
  • Gold: Acts as a hedge. Recommended ~10%, but optional based on preference.

Tips for Using the Calculator

  • Adjust fields based on your risk appetite.
  • Gold isn’t mandatory but can act as insurance.
  • Focus on long-term growth; ignore short-term market swings.
  • Use it to plan for retirement, buying a house, or other financial goals.

Next Steps

In upcoming posts, I'll break down each asset class in detail:

  • Different types of equity mutual funds and ETFs (India & Europe).
  • Debt funds and ETFs for stability.
  • Gold ETFs vs mutual funds for efficiency and lower costs.

Resources I use: justetf.com (Europe) and ET Money (India). Gold can be invested via ETFs in both regions.
